More and more people use mobile gadgets to access the World Wide Web, so the demand for mobile-friendly websites is constantly increasing. To fulfill this demand, the organization that handles the universal top-level domain extensions, ICANN, established the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it should comply with certain restrictions. In other words, all .MOBI websites should be built to be accessed correctly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” created by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the .MOBI Registry organization. These involve how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), etc.
The restrictions have raised some worries due to the fact that the top-level extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to access a website and the way in which this should happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be designed in such a way as to be opened by most browser applications and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
Because the .MOBI Registry organization does not register domains directly, you can purchase a .MOBI domain with any third-party provider, such as ours.
